When I asked the students
why they enrolled in this 6-week intensive summer camp, most responded
because they love baton, they wanted to challenge themselves, and
desired to learn new tricks. I had many goals in mind and an
agenda to follow — there was a lot to complete in 6 weeks of
instruction. If you take a look below, you will find we achieved
our goals (and more!)

Goals |
Mission
Accomplished |
|
Improve general baton handling. |
Weekly skill drills and timed "survivor" type challenges were utilized
to increase baton handling in BOTH HANDS. |
|
Strengthen body technique. |
Introduction to ballet and across the floor dance combinations were used
to help increase coordination and body awareness. |
|
Introduction to fashion modeling. |
Fun dance moves to popular music were used to create and learn a new
element of what you see at regional baton competitions. |
|
Increase flexibility, stamina, and physical fitness. |
Weekly warm-up routines, foot & ankle exercises, marching, and intense
stretching exercises were ways in which we helped condition our cardio
strength and muscle flexibility. |
|
Attempted new (more advanced) solo twirling fundamentals. |
New individual twirling tricks were introduced to motivate weekly
practice. Girls were introduced to aerials (trying multiple spins
underneath the tosses), fingertwirls, and rolls! |
|
Increased our ambidexterity. |
We accomplished this through a sampling of 2-baton. The mind and
body must truly work together to achieve control while twirling multiple
batons. |
|
Introduction to fancy strut. |
Strutting in the baton world is best described as a combination of
twirling, dancing, ballet, acrobatics, and marching techniques completed
in a forward motion down and back the length of a gym floor.
Movement is similar to how a twirler would lead a band in a parade.
Our Lyndsay's ACT Jr. Small Strut Team was showcased at all the year-end
recitals because they are the DMA National Jr Strut Team Champions
(2006). During this summer camp, the girls learned how an
individual would move through a choreographed strut team routine. |
